Chardon-yay!
Let’s Drink White Burgundy
Before we talk about what White Burgundy is and, more importantly, what it isn’t. Let’s agree that there are a lot of wine stereotypes out there. I thoroughly enjoy disproving stereotypes, both in wine and in many other parts of life.
So here it is, White Burgundy is Chardonnay. Please keep reading, please. Chardonnay doesn’t have to be oaky, buttery, or anything that makes you want to run in another direction. Forget about that pour you had at a movie theater or the country club. Chardonnay is an amazing, aromatic, balanced, and sometimes even mouthwatering varietal.
The easiest way for me to help disprove any notions folks have about Chardonnay is to show them White Burgundy. The French take their wine very seriously and there’s not a more important region to them than Burgundy. Next time you’re in the shop or surfing the site, add a bottle of White Burgundy to your cart.
Here are some of my favorites…
Domaine Oudin, Chablis Les Serres
Region: Chablis AOC - Burgundy, France
Grape: Chardonnay
We love a wine that reminds us of wet rocks. This Chablis is sharp but elegant. A squeeze of fresh lemon, vibrant acidity, and a long steely finish. This is how you change your mind about Chardonnay.
Hand-harvested
Indigenous yeast
Fermented in stainless steel and rests on its lees in tank for a year or more.
Sustainable, Vegan
Henri Boillot, Meursault
Region: Meursault AOC - Burgundy
Grape: Chardonnay
Crisp Granny Smith apple, Anjou pear, and faint notes of hazelnut. Classic Burgundian Chardonnay. So fresh and balanced. The oak here is minimal and perfectly integrated. Such a beautiful wine.
Domaine Eric de Suremain, Rully 1er Cru Agneux
Region: Rully 1er Cru AOC - Côte Chalonnaise - Burgundy
Grape: Chardonnay
This wine is subtle on the nose but impactful on the palate. Racy acidity and notes of lemon oil and fresh butter make for an unforgettable Chardonnay experience.
Indigenous yeast
Rests on its lees in barrel for 15 months
