Drink like a mother
Mothers make the world go 'round!
This week we are celebrating Mothers. Here are 5 beverages made by 5 mothers.
Check out all of our favorites here.
Clos Centeilles – A fabulous mother-daughter team are behind this winery from the Languedoc that continues to satisfy whenever I’m in the mood for an unapologetic, southern French fix. Patricia Boyer-Domergue has been making wine since the 1980s and has worked on reviving under-appreciated varieties such as Carignan and Cinsault way before it was a cool thing to do. Her daughter Cécile now works alongside Patricia sharing their authentic wines with the world! La Part de Anges is an ultra-light red (getting into dark rosé territory) that they call a “claret.” It’s a blend of Carignan, Riveyrenc Noir, and Picpoul Noir. Throw it straight into the fridge and enjoy its red fruit character that has a touch of watermelon hard-candy and maraschino cherry!
Christina -Christina Netzl comes from an Austrian family of winemakers and has been working in a vineyard since she was five years old. After studying oenology and wine management she came back to work with her parents while focusing on organic viticulture. After converting her family’s entire operation to certified organic, she became passionate about ancient winemaking practices and branched out to produce her line of natural wines. The St. Laurent she produces from the windy area of Niederösterreich is light and fresh, and beautifully showcases dark fruits and touch of spice.
Filipa Pato - It’s not a rare sight to see Filipa’s sons running around in the winery while she is working. Filipa and her husband William make wines in the Bairrada region of central Portugal, focusing on indigenous grapes only. With a chemical engineering degree and experience making wine from Bordeaux to Mendoza, Filipa combines creativity with experience. An example is the Post Quercus Bical which highlights the white grape that they ferment in clay amphorae. It’s a white that has an element of smokiness but predominately smells of fresh pears and a slight nutty character opening up to notes of thyme and honey. Their moto is “Authentic Wines Without Makeup.”
Marie-Courtin – Dominque Moreau is iconic in the world of grower champagne. Let’s just say, I’ve noticed that anytime I’ve been at a tasting, there is a gravitational pull towards them. Dominque Moreau named her estate after her grandmother, Marie Courtin whom she describes as a “woman of the earth” which is evident in her wines that are full of pure character exhibiting the terroir of the Côte des Bars, Champagne. The Éloquence is 100% Chardonnay and is full of nuanced minerality. It has been described as Chablis with bubbles and I couldn’t agree more.
Bravazzi Hard Italian Soda – Inspired by a vacation to Italy, Bravazzi is the love child of Anne Ellis and Sarah Ross. It is the only hard Italian soda on the market, made with real juice and brewed with pure sugar. Ice cold on their own is all you need, though they are known to be epic cocktail bases if you want to turn it up a notch with your favorite spirit or even as a spritz! We’re crazy about the Grapefruit flavor but tryout the Variety Pack if you want to taste the rainbow!
